VSProse
A chapter-aware manuscript editor that runs structured editorial passes on your prose. The AI suggests. You decide. Every word stays yours.
You're a self-publishing novelist who needs clean, publication-ready prose. A professional editor costs more than most first novels ever earn back. The AI tools rewrite your sentences into generic mush. So you're stuck choosing between unaffordable and unacceptable.

Your chapter files stay on disk, untouched. It edits like a disciplined editor and never writes a word for you. These are your words. Full stop.

For an 80,000-word novel (a typical manuscript length), here's what freelance editors charge:
| Service | Typical rate | Cost for 80k words |
|---|---|---|
| Copy editing | $0.02–$0.04/word | $1,500–$3,000 |
| Line editing | $0.04–$0.07/word | $3,200–$5,600 |
| Developmental editing | $0.03–$0.05/word | $2,400–$4,000 |
A full editorial pass (copy editing, line editing, and developmental feedback) typically runs $3,000–$7,000 for an 80,000-word novel. Many authors need multiple rounds. Even a single round of copy editing alone averages $1,500–$3,000.
VSProse gives you revision cycles at a fraction of that cost. Your digital editors don't charge by the hour, don't have a three-month waiting list, and are available at 2am when inspiration strikes.

Capture your vision: story arc, characters, themes, structure.
VSProse generates synopses from your outlines and checks whether the book holds together — before you draft a word.
Draft each chapter, replacing the outline. VSProse regenerates the synopsis and flags any drift from your plan.
Run copy editing, line editing, and proofreading passes. Accept or reject every change.
Generate PDF, EPUB, Word, or Markdown — ready for the world.
Let the story emerge. Discover where it takes you.
As you write, VSProse generates synopses from your chapters and rolls them into a book synopsis. You get a 10,000-foot view of the novel as it takes shape — without having to plan anything upfront.
Use the book synopsis to spot patterns, threads, and gaps you didn’t see from inside the draft. Write new chapters, revise existing ones, and watch the synopsis evolve with your story.
Once you know where the story is going, write an outline. VSProse compares it against the synopsis of what you’ve actually written — showing you the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

You pay for pages. One page is roughly 250 words of your manuscript taken through every editorial pass: Copy Edit, Line Edit and Proofread. Subscriptions give you a monthly allowance of pages; packs are pages you buy outright and keep forever. One catch worth knowing: if you subscribe, unused pages don't roll over from month to month. Pack pages, though, never expire.
The first 100 paying subscribers become Founding Authors, and they get a 2× multiplier on their monthly page allowance, at the normal price. Writer subscribers get 200 pages a month instead of 100. It stays with you for life.* Once the counter hits 100, that's it. The first hundred are taken.
*For as long as your subscription stays active.
Three editorial passes (Copy Edit, Line Edit, and Proofread) with three editor personas you can choose from: RAINER for a light touch, JAINE for balanced, ELAINOR for strict house-style. You also get chapter and book analysis (synopsis, characters, themes) and export to PDF, EPUB, DOCX, and more.
No. VSProse never touches your chapter files. Every suggested change shows up as a reviewable diff, and you decide what happens to it: accept it, reject it, or hand-edit it yourself. The AI suggests; you decide.
Your manuscript lives as plain Markdown files in a folder on your computer, one file per chapter, human-readable, editable in any text editor. Store them on Dropbox, iCloud, OneDrive, or anywhere you choose. There is no proprietary format and no lock-in. If you stop using VSProse, your files are exactly where you left them.
Running an editing pass does send your text off your machine. The chapter goes in pieces, over an encrypted connection, to our API and on to a cloud AI provider. The editing happens remotely, not on your computer. Our own servers keep none of it: the text exists in our API's memory for the seconds the request takes, and is never written to disk or database. The route runs through OpenRouter to the model providers we work with, and we will name the current model list for anyone who asks. Nothing you send is shown to another VSProse user, and nothing you send is published anywhere. If you want more detail than that, ask us and you'll get it. Some providers may hold a request for a short period for safety and abuse checks, where their own terms require it.
VSProse runs on Mac and Windows. Linux is coming. See our support page for where each platform stands.
Not anymore. The Starter Pack took its place: $2.99 buys 20 pages: one chapter of your real manuscript, through every editorial pass. Card required, new accounts only.
